Way of the Dragon Classes & Workshops

Way of the Dragon 6-Days Introductory Workshop

The Way of the Dragon workshop is a six-day intensive designed to introduce the seminal ideas and practices of the Way of the Dragon to prospective students. The teaching/practice schedule of the workshop is Monday through Saturday, 5-8:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m. to Noon, 1-5:00 p.m., and 7-9:00 p.m. Meals are provided at 8:00 a.m., Noon, and 5:30 p.m. This will be a week rich in discovery, personal challenge, growth, learning, and inspiration that may change your life in wonderful and unexpected ways.

Beginner's Gate

As with any discipline, one begins at the beginnning. The Beginner's Gate introduces theories and practices that constitute the foundation for taking up the Way of the Dragon's spiritual path. The Beginner's Gate is comprised of two weekend workshops and one three-months-long class, which are listed here:

Eye of the Dragon Workshop

The Eye of the Dragon is a three-days weekend workshop wherein the mysteries of God, consciousness, awareness and creation are explored. The insights and ideas that will be presented are theological, psychological, philosophical and ecological in nature. Many important questions will be addressed, such as "What is God?", “What is the nature of existence?”, “What is the soul?”, “What is health, happiness and sanity?”, “What is evil?”, “What is consciousness?“ and much more.

The weekend will be structured around lectures and discussions, so be prepared to do some serious thinking and contemplation. Some time will be allotted for mind/body practice, such as meditation, Tai Chi and Tibetan Kum Nye relaxation exercises.

Original Mind Workshop

Original Mind is a three-days weekend workshop in the study of eco-psychology and the practice of meditation for the purpose of becoming happy, healthy, enlightened human beings. Of all the techniques and disciplines that characterize the Dragon’s Way, meditation is the Root. The Buddha once said, “All actions are led by the mind: mind is their master, mind is their maker. Like the cart-wheel that follows the foot of the ox, all actions are led by the mind.” So, like good ox-herders, we must train our minds so that our thoughts, words and deeds generate happiness and health rather than sorrow and sickness. Using the methods of concentration, mindfulness, insight, lecture, discussion, and contemplation, we will embark upon a journey of discovery to our true self, the Original Mind, that is beyond all suffering and is the source of happiness and health.

Proper instruction in meditation, as in all disciplines, entails theory, practice and feedback. The structure of this class will incorporate periods of practice for each step of instruction. Who knows? Going nowhere, doing nothing, one might finally arrive home in goodness and sanity.

Dancing Dragons Tai Chi Class

Dancing Dragons Tai Chi is a three-months-long class in an ancient form of exercise developed in China for the purpose of increasing the flow of blood, breath and, therefore, “Chi”, which is the Chinese word for Life Force, using martial art forms with heightened awareness and concentration. There are two basic forms of Tai Chi practice: the short form and the long form. This class studies the short form coupled with Tibetan Kum Nye relaxation techniques.

Tantra Gate

The Tantra Gate introduces the practioner to the tantric view of life, and it fosters growth in the tantric arts. This gate is necessary to cultivate sensual perception to heighten and refine awareness of the energetic world around us as well as the worlds within us.

Tantra | The First Turning of the Medicine Mandala

The class, Tantra | First Turning of the Medicine Mandala, is a study of the integration of Eastern and Western principles and practices regarding our inter-relationships between non-physical beings, energy, space, our bodies, our environments, and our selves. The theoretical and practical contents of the class are drawn from principles and practices derived from the rich traditions of kundalini yoga, Vajra tantra, sexual tantra, Taoist tantra, and sensual immersion. The pre-requisites for this workshop are Eye of the Dragon, Original Mind and Dancing Dragons Tai Chi Class.

Totemic Tantra Yoga Class

Totemic Tantra Yoga incorporates a variety of physical, sexual, sensual, mental, imaginative and energetic techniques to concentrate the mind, energize the body, enliven the senses, enrich the soul and expand consciousness. The program of study will include physical postures, breath work, creative visualization, sensual stimulation (i.e. - aromatic oils, therapeutic touch, etc.), sexual stimulation (with or without partners depending upon class constraints), meditation, and theoretical contemplation. All of this is brought together in an atmosphere of privacy, nurturance, respect and self-discipline so that we might relax, release, reform and re-affirm our lives. In doing so, we reclaim the royal throne of our soul, from which we can rule our lives with wisdom and compassion. The pre-requisite of this workshop is Tantra | First Turning of the Medicine Mandala Class.

Shaman's Gate

The Shaman's Gate builds upon the disciplines of the first two gates and applies those disciplines to the arts of healing body, mind ,soul and the natural world, as well as communicating with Nature.

Shamanism | The Second Turning of the Medicine Mandala

The class, Shamanism | The Second Turning of the Medicine Mandala, is derived from integrating Eastern and Western principles and practices regarding the physical and spiritual perspectives about the inter-relationships between non-physical beings, energy, space, our bodies, our environments, and our self concepts. The theoretical and practical contents of the class are drawn from principles and practices derived from eco-psychology, Shamanism, Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism, Shintoism and Chinese Feng Shui. Various techniques will be taught that range from prayer, meditation, energy work, and purification practices to spatial arrangement, divination, healing, working with spiritual beings, Native American medicine wheel instruction, and more. This class meets one evening per week for three months, and it is intended to ground the student in the basic sanity and goodness of Nature and the powers of the Natural World that comprise the world of the Shaman. The pre-requisite for this workshop is Totemic Tantra Yoga Class.

Communication with Nature Workshop

Communication with Nature is possible. In fact, everyone does it all the time, although most of us do it at an unconscious or subconscious level. Once we begin to pay attention, we will begin to hear the voice of Nature in our bones. It is the voice of the Dragon. When we live in accord with the Way, we begin to understand Nature’s language. Then, we will know that the devic, faerie and other spiritual realms of Nature are not just fantastical notions found in children’s stories; rather, they are an ever present host of co-creators.

Animals, plants and the four realms of earth, water, air and fire participate in the dance of divine awareness and universal consciousness, as do humans. However, modern humans have become deaf to Nature’s voice because we are too infatuated with our selves and our busy lives. This class is meant to turn our attention away from ourselves, slow things down and awaken our intuitive rapport with the world of Nature. Over the course of three months, the class will practice a variety of techniques that heighten our awareness and awaken our intuition. We will work with animals, plants, and the four elemental realms of earth, water, air and fire. We will learn to commune with Nature and become co-creators with Her and Her non-human children. The pre-requisite for this workshop is Shamanism | Second Turning of the Medicine Mandala Class.

Dreamtime Yoga Class

The Dreamtime Yoga class is designed to provide students with knowledge and skills of interpretation and discernment so that they may begin to understand their dream-life and prosper from the insights of their unconscious minds. The retreat will consist of theory and practice. The theoretical dimension of the class will include material about Jungian Archetypes, as well as contemporary and ancient perspectives on the nature of dreams. The practical dimension of the class will focus on the use of lucid dreaming, creative visualization, and astral projection techniques, discernment, intuition, right use of will, journaling, drawing (and/or painting), and group dreaming labs. Note: the group dreaming labs will require students to sleep overnight in one room. The size of the room will be determined by the number of students. The pre-requisite for this workshop is Shamanism | Second Turning of the Medicine Mandala Class.

Shamanic Journey Workshop

Shamanic Journey is the first workshop in a series of three workshops specifically focused on the basic principles and techniques of Shamanism, which is the most ancient way in which humans danced with the Dragon. By riding the drum horse, the shaman trance journeys through this world, the world below and/or the world above, where she or he learns what is needed for health and healing for individuals, communities, and the natural world.

This workshop is designed to introduce students to the ancient art of trance journey, which should not be confused with astral projection. Students will be instructed in the three-world Shamanic worldview, what to generally expect in each world and how to navigate each world.

There will be extensive practice in journey work. Each workshop participant is expected to openly share the contents of his or her respective journeys. Although private interviews will be available, they are generally discouraged because the learning of all workshop participants is greatly enriched by the sharing of individual experiences, especially personally challenging experiences. Remember that the shaman is the wounded healer whose heart is broken open so that the world may pour in and the love and healing may pour out.

Use of drums, rattles and/or rhythm sticks should be expected, so bring what you have. (If you don’t have, then improvise!) Also, expect to do some inspired dancing.

The pre-requisites for this workshop are Shamanism | Second Turning of the Medicine Mandala Class.

Shamanic Healing Workshop

Shamanic Healing is the second workshop in a series of three workshops dedicated to instruction in the principles and techniques of Shamanism. This workshop is designed to introduce students to the ancient art of trance healing. Students will be instructed in Shamanic diagnosis, interpretation, extraction, confirmation and closure.

There will be extensive practice and review. Each workshop participant is expected to openly share the contents of his or her respective healing experiences, both as healer and as patient.

There is one pre-requisite to this workshop is Shamanic Journey.

Soul Retrieval Workshop

Soul Retrieval is the third workshop in a series of three workshops introducing the principles and techniques of Shamanism. This workshop is designed to introduce students to the ancient art of soul retrieval. Students will be instructed in the diagnosis of soul loss and soul theft, as well as tracking and guiding. Also, the Shamanic worldview will be elaborated upon in order to introduce the neophyte to different realms of the soul. There will be extensive practice and review.

Our souls exist as a confluence of Body, Mind, Spirit, Nature and Environment. Generally, this confluence is integrated and whole — more or less. However, this integrated wholeness can be compromised, and when it is, we experience illness in the body, the mind, Nature, and/or the Environment. Sometimes, the disintegration is brought on by traumatic circumstance that causes “soul displacement” or “soul loss”. This is a dangerous condition that is characterized by a propensity for illness, misfortune, and a pervasive feeling of enervation, confusion, and/or meaninglessness.

In times of soul loss, the shaman is needed to retrieve the soul. By riding the drum horse, the shaman trance journeys through this world, the world below and the world above, seeking for the lost soul. In these journeys, she or he learns what is needed for healing the soul of an individual, community, and/or the natural environment. Since the shaman generally communicates with all living things in both this world and in others, she or he is able to help guide a soul back to its proper relationship within a person or community. Thus, she or he is able to foster a balance of life in "right relationship". This practical spirituality of "right relationship" constitutes a path of righteousness and wisdom that is in full accord with the Way of the Dragon.

This workshop has one pre-requisite is Shamanic Healing Workshop.

Vision Quest

The Vision Quest is an ancient practice for regaining the soul’s true path. By placing ourselves back in Nature with nothing more than a blanket, our prayers and water, thus removing the physical, emotional and mental clutter of our daily lives, we are able to become quiet, enabling Spirit to speak to us. In so doing, the Dragon can reveal the Way that we were born to walk — the Way we have lost.

The Vision Quest is a powerful tool for healing, guidance and transformation because it strips the participant of his or her ego props while undergoing, more-or-less, a solitary ordeal in the wilderness without clothing or food. The actual quest is a three-day, three-night sojourn that takes place within the context of the seven-day retreat. In preparation for the quest, the retreatants are required to undergo a period of introspection in order to clarify what question or questions they bring into the quest. Also, the retreatants are introduced to the rites of the quest, and they are involved in the construction and participation of a Lakota sweat lodge. The retreatants need to know that there are four days of fasting from solid foods and juices. Understand that a quest is not a “feel good” get-a-way. It is a very powerful practice that will challenge you physically, emotionally, mentally, socially, and spiritually. The pre-requisite for this workshop is the Second Turning of the Medicine Mandala.

Dragon's Gate

The Dragon's Gate is the culmination of the training, opening the mind to the pathless path and realizing the true freedom of the Dragon.

Great Perfection | The Third Turning of the Medicine Mandala

The class, Great Perfection | Third Turning of the Medicine Mandala, is a study of the Pathless Path, which is also known as the crazy wisdom tradition. Having mastered spiritual knowledge and skills, we have the opportunity to be truly free. This class is an exploration of what that means in our respective sojourns. The content is provided in the week-long workshop. The pre-requisite for this workshop is completion of the first three gates: Beginner's Gate, Tantra Gate and Shaman's Gate.

Walk-About

The Walk-About is a month-long journey of inner and outer discovery, as well as a rite of initiation. It is derived from an ancient Australian Aboriginal rite of passage for awakening the soul’s true relationship with the land and it’s inhabitants, thus becoming a responsible human being -- an adult. Similarly, by placing ourselves in Nature for a month, thus removing the physical, emotional and mental clutter of our daily lives, we are able to become quiet, enabling Spirit to speak to us. In this way, we are able to attend to the wisdom of the Dragon and regain our proper relationship with the Earth and all Life — to regain our place in the vast and sacred mandala of Creation by becoming responsible human beings.

The journey will consist of a serendipitous trek in a wilderness, or semi-wilderness, area. This is a “destination free” adventure of the spirit, wherein the transformative rite of awakening of the Dragon is the goal. It is a time for students of the Way of the Dragon to root themselves in the knowledge and practice of the Way by living each day deeply immersed in contemplation and practice of the Way in a natural setting. The location and costs for the journey will be announced. This journey is open only to students of the Way of the Dragon who have completed the entire coursework.
